New Swimming Facilities For Orkney

Orkney's new swimming pool is to open later this month following a period of construction work.

The facility at Pickaquoy Centre was handed over to the Council on Friday before it is handed over to the Picky Centre this week.

Once it is handed over, work will then begin to install equipment in the fitness area.

It is hoped the 'dry' areas of the new facility, which include the gym, squash courts and soft play areas, will be ready for use from 15 June, with the swimming pool available the following week.

Council Convener Steven Heddle said: "The pool and the other new additions to the Picky Centre, including the three new squash courts, really are superb facilities, which will serve the community well for many years to come.

"The project has had a lengthy delay which has been disappointing for the Council and for the public - the fact remains it’s an impressive addition to Orkney that’s worth waiting for."

The new facilities, which are part of Orkney Islands Council’s £57m Schools Investment Programme, include:

  • A six-lane, 25-metre pool, fitted with a moveable floor so it can accommodate a wide range of activities

  • Teaching/training pool

  • Toddler pool

  • Water features including a sauna/steam room

  • Three squash courts

  • Changing and spectating areas
