A bridge in Aberdeenshire is to be restored after it received a £100k grant, according to The Scotsman.

The Huntly Castle Bridge, in Huntly, partially collapsed four years ago due to severe winter weather.

It was once the main route out of the town and crosses the River Deveron at the main entrance to the Castle Hotel.

In February 2009, a large section of the parapet and part of the road fell onto the banks of the river following a period of severe frosts and heavy snow. This weather was followed by a rapid thaw, which are thought to have weakened the structure of the bridge.


Following the news of a grant, it is hoped the landmark will be brought back into use. The fund is a Building Repair Grant from Historic Scotland.

Fiona Hyslop, the Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs said: "Historic buildings, such as Huntly Castle Bridge offer great opportunities for education as well as providing important landmarks in our towns and cities which are key to our identity, community and memories.

"This is an exciting and worthwhile project and I am delighted that it has been supported through the Building Repair Grants."
