Date Set For Dundee Flat Demolition

A date has been confirmed for the demolition of two of Dundee's tallest housing blocks.

The Courier has said the two towers – Bucklemaker Court and Butterburn Court – will be brought down on Sunday 30 June.

Safedem will take charge of the demolition, with an exclusion zone being established around the flats in the Hilltown area.

Local Councillor Jimmy Black said residents were being informed of the demolition via a letter.

He said: "There will be an exclusion zone and a number of people will be asked to leave their homes for that day. It would be very unsafe for anybody to be in the immediate vicinity. Although their record is very good, it just takes one brick to fall the wrong way and it could cause an injury.

"A lot of people will want to go up the Law, and the police and the council are aware that will have to be managed in some way to ensure people are safe from overcrowding. It is going to be quite a day."

However, Mr Black, the city’s former housing convener, added that he had been opposed to the demolition of the housing blocks.

He explained: "I still feel the demolition unnecessary and I think we could do with 374 flats. I’ve never supported the demolition and I am sad that by the time I became convener of housing it was too late and it was unfortunate I was unable to reverse that decision."
