It is understood developers behind a major housing scheme in Edinburgh are planning to cut the number of homes originally proposed.
According to The Scotsman, developers are to halve the number of homes in order to make way for larger properties as well as a retail district.
As many as 3,400 apartments and houses were to be built in the Granton Harbour area in North Edinburgh, but Granton Central Developments Ltd, which has since taken control of the ambitious project, has asked to amend permission for the project to around 1,700 properties.
The Council is to meet with backers later this week amid concerns over the large reduction in housing numbers. The developers have claimed the previous plans for a selection of one and two-bed apartments are no longer practical, and said it hopes to meet the demand for larger homes with three and four-bedroom properties. Amenities would also be constructed to attract families, including a large indoor produce market, a designer clothes outlet and a refurbished marina on the Granton coast.
However, GDC has said plans by previous developers for one and two bed apartments were no longer viable, and that it intends to meet demand for larger homes with three and four bedrooms, while delivering the amenities needed to attract families.
The regeneration of Granton has been in planning stages for more than 10 years, but has repeatedly falling through, leaving a majority of the land derelict. Around 340 of the 3,400 properties planned for the area have been built to date.
