£2.7m Water Works Infrastructure Completed

A £2.7m infrastructure project to improve a water programme in South Lanarkshire has been completed, the Evening Times has said.

The investment was undertaken at waste water treatment plants at Lanark and Carstairs, with £2.1m and £682k invested respectively.

The Lanark water works will serve a population or more an 8,000, as well as a small number of industrial units, while Carstairs Village water works is situated to the south of the village and was the key focus of a scheme to enhance the water quality in the nearby Flush Burn.

The investment will ensure that the works continues to comply with the European Freshwater for Fish and Water Framework directives and protect the Powmilon Burn and Avon Water.

Gavin Noble, Construction Manager for Scottish Water, said: "We constructed a 2km long transfer sewer that removes flows from the Flush Burn and redirects them to the River Clyde.

"The deeper and more turbulent waters of the Clyde offer much greater dilution of the effluent, which is very small given that the population of Carstairs Village is only around 900 people.

"The project also took account of growth in the village from additional properties."

Rob Mustard, General Manager for waste water, added: "Scottish Water's investment will deliver clearer, fresher drinking water and reduce interruptions to supply.

"The natural environment will continue to be protected as we plan to invest over £1 billion across Scotland on new pumping stations, waste water treatment works and the waste water network."
