Moray Council is to receive up to £11.6m in funding from the Scottish Government to assist with the new build of Elgin High School.

The amount of funding is two-thirds of the anticipated cost of the project.

Councillor Anne Skene, who chairs Moray council's Children and Young People's Services Committee, confirmed the news at a meeting on Wednesday.


She said a letter of confirmation had been received from the Scottish Futures Trust, which manages the Scottish Government's Schools for the Future building programme.

The Council has already set aside £7m as its share of the cost of the new build. It has also established a project team who are working collaboratively with hubCo, who will oversee the appointment of main contractors for the project.

Councillor Skene said the extra funding made the replacement school an "achievable project".

The existing Elgin High opened in 1978 and work on its replacement is expected to begin in spring 2014, with a completion date by summer 2015.
