Council Submits Revised V&A Plans

Construction News Image
Dundee City Council have submitted revised plans for its £45m Victoria & Albert (V&A) museum and riverside walkway plans.

According to Urban Realm, the changes by the Council follow a rethink to locate the facility offshore.

The scheme will form part of Dundee's waterfront masterplan and will be situated on the site of the former Olympia Leisure Centre which is scheduled for demolition in 2014. The site will also provide more direct links to the city centre.

In all other aspects, the scheme will remain the same as before, and will be visible to pedestrians on Union Street before inviting movement towards the presently underutilised riverfront.

Designed by Cre8 Architecture and Kengo Kuma, the project is scheduled to open its doors in 2015.

Late last year, it was revealed the V&A museum was to be moved out of the Tay and onto dry land in an effort to cut costs, yet still maintain the quality of the project.

At the time, an unnamed source told Urban Realm: "The Kuma building, if delivered, is going to be great but the Dundee Council Team might have bitten off more than they can chew. More like £135 million of chewing."

While critics of the museum building had contended that the plans were undeliverable at the stated construction cost of £31m due to the difficulty of building a substructure out into the Tay.
