Construction union UCATT has said it will fight for each worker currently employed by companies Muirfield and Carillion.

The workers involved are working on an Aberdeen City Council contract.

More than 30 workers could be made redundant in Aberdeen this month after a kitchen and bathroom contract was won by contractor Sidey. The contractor, however, is said to be refusing to accept that TUPE applies for workers currently engaged on the contract with Carillion and Muirfield.


The workers with the two companies are currently employed to replace kitchen and bathrooms in council properties owned by Aberdeen Council.

Harry Frew, Scottish Regional Secretary, said: "It is absolutely disgraceful the way in which these workers are being treated. We will be pursuing every avenue to ensure they keep their jobs, and believe that TUPE should apply with workers transferring with the contract.

"We are looking to the council to ensure any incoming contractors accept that the workforce will transfer and are employed as part of the contract. The workers should not suffer due to the failings of others."

Local UCATT official Steve Dillon has met with the council and contractors in order to seek a resolution to the impasse and will continue to fight for members jobs. The union are also taking legal advice on the matter.
