ICE Inspires Engineers Of The Future

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Scotland has launched a new campaign to build public awareness of how civil engineering shapes our daily lives and present engineering as an attractive career option.

Barr Construction is the first Scottish-based firm to support the campaign by displaying This is Civil Engineering banners at a prominent supermarket development in the west of Edinburgh.

Large scale banners have been erected on the steel structure at the site on Inglis Green Road where Barr is building a retail development for Morbaine Ltd.

Barclay Chalmers, Managing Director for Barr Construction and Chairman of the Glasgow and West of Scotland branch of ICE Scotland, said: "One of the main drivers for the ICE is to inspire young people to choose a career in Civil Engineering.

“Similarly for Barr, the future of the company depends upon bringing into the business talented school leavers and graduates who will be key to the growth of the company."

From roads and bridges to pipes and windfarms, the campaign will show just how Scotland’s key infrastructure is being delivered by civil engineers. As more members of ICE Scotland take part, banners will be displayed at project locations across the country. Those interested in learning more will be directed to the campaign website to learn more. A QR code is being used to provide quick links too.

Sara Thiam, Regional Director for ICE Scotland, said: "A recent survey of members of the public suggested that many people just aren’t aware of what civil engineering is. Yet we all rely on services provided by those in the industry every day so it’s time to shine a light on exactly what civil engineering is.

"This is an exciting new initiative which encourages people to learn more about the industry and we hope may even encourage young people to think about becoming the civil engineers of the future. We hope that many more organisations in the country will also join the campaign and spread the word."
