Part of the Kessock Bridge works were closed yesterday, after a mobile crane became entangled in a temporary barrier.

The incident occurred at 10:00 and involved the crane becoming entangled and blocking the northbound lane.

The southbound lane was closed to aid recovery of the vehicle, meaning the entire bridge had to be closed for around 45 minutes.

The crane is reported to have been right on the limits of those permitted through the works unescorted.


The Highland Council says similar vehicles have passed through the works without incident.

Following discussions with Northern Constabulary, it has now been agreed that the allowable width of unescorted vehicles will be reduced from 3.0m to 2.9m to avoid any re-occurrences of the accident.

Transport Scotland is carrying out essential works to the Kessock Bridge in order to ensure it can be used by drivers for the next thirty years.

The road surface of the bridge is reaching the end of its working life, with the need for repairs becoming increasingly disruptive to traffic.

The bridge is now being resurfaced in its entirety, thereby saving motorists time lost to roadworks.
