Dunfermline Councillors Discuss £1.15m Investment

Councillors on the City of Dunfermline Area Committee have been discussing a report which recommends an estimated £1.15m investment in road improvement projects for the city during 2013/14.

A further £1.24m is also to be invested to improve the city’s footpaths, street lighting and road safety over the same period.

Fife Council is currently entering the eighth year of an 11-year project to replace old street lighting columns in an investment of £40m.

A separate lighting efficiency project will result in the replacement of 42,000 old street lighting bulbs with new energy-efficient ones over the next six years.

7,000 bulbs are planned to be replaced in 2013/14 at a cost of £1.4m.

The main projects for Dunfermline in 2013/14 are resurfacing the A907 Carnock Road, footway reconstruction at Tweed Street and replacing street lighting and columns in Dunfermline and Crossford.

Chair of City of Dunfermline Area Committee Mike Rumney welcomed the investment in the city’s streets: "This is important continued investment in the very fabric of our community," he said.

"I know how much it means to local people to have a roads network that is fit for purpose and it’s great news for Dunfermline that we’ve agreed to these improvements."

Cllr. Pat Callaghan, Executive Spokesperson for Transport & Environment, added: "Everyone living or working in Fife will benefit from the £49m investment in our street lights over the next six years, and a further £54m investment to upgrade roads. In Fife we’re committed to investing significant funding to look after our transport network. This is vital for Fife’s economy and will benefit everybody travelling through Fife for work, business and pleasure."
