East Ayrshire Council has been awarded £750,000 of funding by the Scottish Government to regenerate the historic town of Galston.
The town is yet another historic area of Scotland to benefit from the Conservation Area Regeneraion Scheme (CARS).
Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Fiona Hyslop said: "Our historic environment plays a key role in communities and this funding provides an opportunity to invest back into the historic fabric and back into the heart of communities.
"It also provides the opportunity to help stimulate economic regeneration, a key priority in today’s economic climate, be that through a new end use or rejuvenating an existing facility.
"I am delighted to announce this funding, which will benefit communities the length and breadth of Scotland, and will give more areas than ever before the opportunity to benefit from this investment."
Councillor Jim Buchanan, East Ayrshire Council’s Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration, said: "The regeneration of our towns is a high priority for the Council and the CARS funding will allow the Council to work in partnership with the recently formed Galston Community Development Trust and other Community Planning Partners to kick start the regeneration of Galston. It will make a significant difference to the town, actively encouraging the conservation and renovation of properties within the Conservation Area.
"Galston has a host of beautiful historic buildings which are sadly deteriorating. This CARS funding means that we can work with their owners to make them wind and water tight, bringing them up to modern standards using traditional methods which fit best with the fabric of the buildings. At the same time we’re improving the built environment, making buildings fit for purpose for modern use and providing opportunities for contractors, craftspeople and businesses."
Since 2005, there have been four CARS application rounds.
The funding is available to provide financial assistance for Conservation Area based regeneration and conservation initiatives.
