The preferred route for the new A77 Maybole bypass has been unveiled in South Ayrshire.
Transport Minister Keith Brown revealed the plans for the scheme, which have gone on public display.
The scheme will see over three miles of new road constructed in a bid to increase overtaking capabilities and improve journey times.
It is hoped the development will help ease congestion through Maybole.
Visiting the public exhibition at the town’s Carrick Centre, Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "This Scottish Government is committed to enhancing connections across Ayrshire and beyond, particularly to and from the Loch Ryan ports, to help support sustainable economic growth.
"Anyone who travels on the A77 through Maybole will be only too aware of the congestion that can be encountered in the centre of this South Ayrshire town. On a previous visit, I listened and took on board the community’s concerns about this issue and that is why I welcome this latest step in the delivery of a much needed scheme.
"Constructing a bypass at Maybole will help separate local traffic from traffic travelling further afield, including to the ports. This will lead to improved road safety for local communities and road users alike and provide better journey time reliability for motorists and businesses along the full length of the A77
"I would encourage local people to offer their comments on the preferred route for this project which will bring lasting benefits for South Ayrshire and Scotland as a whole."
The current programme is to complete the design of the preferred route option and publish draft orders by autumn 2013.
