George Square Design Decision Delayed

Construction News Image
Glaswegians will have to wait longer than planned to see the winning design for the redevelopment of George Square, after the judging panel was unable to make a decision.

Six companies have been short-listed in the international competition and the judges were expected to make a final decision on 18 January.

But the panel has been unable to reach a decision and will not be able to reconvene until next week.

Glasgow City Council received 35 submissions for the £15m project from across the globe, including Australia, the USA and Sweden.

The six short-listed submissions are by:

- Burns + Nice (UK)

- Gustafson Porter (UK)

- James Corner Field Operations (USA)

- jmarchitects (UK)

- John McAslan & Partners (UK)

The competition winner will work in partnership with the Council to develop the final design.

The judging panel comprises: David Mackay, partner, MBM Architects Barcelona; Professor Andy McMillan, former head of Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art; David Harding, former head of Environmental Art, Glasgow School of Art; Geoff Ellis, director of DF Concerts; and Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council. The panel's technical advisor is Neil Baxter, secretary and treasurer, RIAS.

Councillor Matheson said: "It's disappointing, but it's important that we get this right. We will make a decision next week."

The shortlisted designs are on display at The Lighthouse in Mitchell Lane, Glasgow, and on the council's website.

Members of the public will be able to continue to leave comments at The Lighthouse or online until 17:00 on Friday, 18 January.
