Residents in an area of Dundee could be set for warmer homes and lower bills, provided an £8m project goes ahead.
Dundee City Council’s housing committee is to be asked to support a joint pilot Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme with Scottish Gas for multi storeys and other homes around Kirk Street in Lochee.
Jimmy Black housing committee convener said: "With this scheme tenants could be looking forward to a reduction in their heating bills of between 30 and 40%.
"We have been at the forefront of energy efficiency in Dundee for a number of years providing cleaner greener schemes, for example the district heating system at the Dallfield multis.
"With this proposed pilot, residents of both multi storey and low rise homes will be able to benefit from better insulation, cheaper, more controllable energy and new kitchens and bathrooms.
"By upgrading the external insulation and render, something that the council could not have afforded on its own, and installing a gas powered district heating system, ECO funding has given us a way of achieving the Scottish Housing Quality Standard and providing warm, comfortable homes for tenants as well as a way to address fuel poverty.
"This development makes living in that part of Lochee an attractive proposition and fits with the council’s wider on going regeneration of the area by keeping the population within walking distance of local shops and businesses."
If the scheme is approved, Scottish Gas has said it will retain the services of the current sub contractors. Local firm McGill Electrical Ltd is the main electrical and plumbing subcontractor.
The housing committee meets on Monday 14 January.
