Comhairle Announces Barra Harbour Redevelopment

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has announced a Coastal Communities fund award of £283,341 towards the redevelopment of Ardveenish Harbour in Barra.

The Comhairle has offered up capital funds to the project, while Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) have also agreed to contribute.

The Comhairle is now going out to tender, and it is expected work will begin in Spring 2013. The overall project cost will be in the region of £1.5m

Comhairle Leader Angus Campbell said: "This is very welcome news. The Comhairle recognised the importance of a safe, secure harbour at Ardveenish and the development of harbour infrastructure in the area was agreed by the Comhairle in 2009 to protect fishing and processing employment and develop other important economic activity in a fragile island area."
