Aberdeenshire Sports Centre Ahead Of Schedule

Construction of a new sports and community centre is running ahead of schedule, according to Aberdeenshire Council.

The facility at Fraserburgh is expected to be completed by February 2013, when it will open to the public. The exact date is still to be confirmed.

The local community will be given the chance to hear about how the work is progressing, as well as the opportunity to ask questions during a meeting at the Broch Community Centre on 5 December.

The public will be asked to describe how they use facilities in the town, in order to ensure the new development can meet community needs across Fraserburgh.

The £9m complex is being built as part of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning & Leisure Capital Plan.

It will replace the existing swimming pool and community centre in Fraserburgh.

A stakeholder group met for the first time on Novermber 14 to view images of the new centre and discuss the opening programme of events.

The facility will include a six-lane championship pool, sports and fitness facilities and a range of community and learning activities

About £9m has been allocated for the project in the council’s Capital Plan, combined with SportScotland lottery funding of £500,000.

Local group FISSH (Fraserburgh area Initiative for Swimming, Sport and Health) have been fundraising in the community and will help pay for a 40-metre internal flume.

Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning & Leisure Committee, Cllr Isobel Davidson, said: "This is not just a replacement swimming pool, it is so much more than that – a £9 million state-of-the-art facility which will create opportunities for leisure, community and cultural activities.

"The community has been involved, and continues to be involved, in shaping the new centre and I hope it is something the people of Fraserburgh can be proud of."
