North Ayrshire Church Restoration Underway

The former Trinity Church in Irvine in North Ayrshire is being redeveloped this month as part the transformation of the town centre.

The repair and restoration began yesterday, as Fleming Masonry began work on the main church and hall. The company also began conservation work on the tower and spire.

The £700,000 project will take about 44 weeks and is due for completion in September next year.

The cost is being supported by Historic Scotland, Irvine Bay Regeneration Company and North Ayrshire Council.

The Council has informed residents access will be required to and from the site, and has ensured that the impact will be minimal.

Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, said: "This is a really significant point in the regeneration of this iconic building in the town, and will prepare it for a new and vibrant life."

Councillor Marie Burns, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: "Trinity Church is one of Irvine's most important landmarks and has big role to play in the rejuvenation of the wider town centre. One of the key aims of the town centre programme is the retention of historical buildings like Trinity Church and Town House to protect the heritage of the town and complement a modern and attractive town centre."

Ranald MacInnes, Head of Heritage Management, Historic Scotland said: "Historic Scotland is delighted to support and see the progress that is being made on the redevelopment of Trinity Church. I recently visited the site and was impressed to see the wider programme of work that is being undertaken to regenerate the town centre. I am confident that the reuse of the historical Trinity Church can play an important role in helping secure the town's future."
