East Lothian Partners With Sainsbury's For Regeneration

East Lothian Council has announced it will be forming a partnership with Sainsbury’s under new plans to regenerate Haddington.

The Haddington Vision Steering Committee will be aided by the Council and the supermarket giant amid plans to regenerate Haddington and put the town 'firmly on the map'.

Sainsbury’s is said to have invested £20m for the refurbishment, which will see planning submitted for a store on the outskirts of Haddington, after outline planning permission was granted earlier this year.

The partnership will "help deliver practical ways of attracting new visitors and shoppers to Haddington, as well as continuing to invest in improving and making the town more attractive,” according to East Lothian Council."

The Council has recently secured investment of over £17m in Haddington for the town centre, including the new John Gray Centre, which opened in April following investment of over £7m.

Environmental improvements have been carried out in the High Street along with the introduction of the new one-way system and the newly-opened £9.4m school campus.

Council Leader Willie Innes said: "We are very pleased to be working with Sainsbury’s on this ambitious vision for Haddington and look forward to seeing some of our plans come to fruition."

Alan Blackie, Chair of the Vision Committee, added: "We welcome the support from East Lothian Council and Sainsbury's - both of which are vital if we are to achieve the Haddington Vision."

Sainsbury’s Scottish Development Surveyor Paul Miller said: "Sainsbury’s sees Haddington as an attractive place to invest, and from day one have been committed to working in partnership to ensure that our investment is a spur for further improvements for the town, its centre and businesses. We have been very impressed by the commitment from the council and the new Vision Committee."
