The Highland Council continues to seek engineering solutions to the A890 Stromeferry bypass following news of a minor landslip last week.

A survey was undertaken on Friday following the slip by the Council’s engineer, URS consulting engineers and TRAC geotechnical contractors.

Concrete barriers have now been placed at the bottom of the slope in order to ensure there is no spillage of debris onto the road.

Additional barriers are being put in place today in order to make way for the removal of debris on Wednesday.


The Council says traffic will be maintained throughout the safeguarding procedures, with with minor interruptions for loading trucks.

The latest slip follows the closure of the stretch of road from 22 December 2011 to 23 April this year which cost the local authority £2.8m.

The Highland Council continues to look for long-term solutions for the road.

Options being considered by the Council include a £60m bridge, a £94m, 1.2 mile tunnel or a longer bypass which could cost £23m.

When the bypass was closed, drivers were faced with a 140-mile diversion which replaced the usual 18 mile route from Lochcarron to Plockton.

A small car ferry, a pleasure cruiser and train services were put in place in order to minimise the inconvenience experienced by drivers.
