The latest school to be part of Inverclyde Council’s £200m refurbishment and school building programme has been opened.
Whinhill Primary School in Greenock was opened by Duncan McNeil MSP.
The £5m refurbishment project is an amalgamation of two schools; Highlanders and Overton. The original building has been extensively refurbished and extended.
The new Whinhill Primary School will offer English medium and Gaelic medium from early years to primary seven.
Duncan McNeil MSP paid tribute to Mrs Elizabeth Ruddy, Head Teacher and staff for bringing Highlanders Academy and Overton Primary School together.
"I was impressed with the setting of the school," he said.
"The stunning views over the Clyde, and the bright and airy interior cannot fail to enhance the learning and teaching experience of staff and pupils. I was pleased to learn that the cultural legacy of Highlanders Academy will live on in the Gaelic Unit and nursery.
"The recognition of our shared community and history will ensure a successful future for Whinhill Primary School."
Inverclyde Council’s education convener, Councillor Terry Loughran, said: "The opening of Whinhill Primary School is part of our £200m investment in our school buildings right across Inverclyde. As part of our programme, every child will, when completed, benefit from a new or refurbished school. That’s a commitment we are delivering on for this and for future generations. It is a truly remarkable investment in our schools and shows a real commitment to our young people, teachers and communities.
"Our school building programme isn’t just about the buildings, it’s about delivering top class facilities to match the learning inside them. It is clear that the children and staff at Whinhill are enjoying their school and I would like to thank them for making all of so welcome as we officially opened the fabulous school."
