Hydro Scheme Backed By Councillors

A controversial Lochaber hydro-electric scheme has received backing from Highland councillors.

SSE are in charge of plans for the £800m, 600MW project to be constructed at Coire Glas near Spean Bridge.

Opponents have warned it would damage tourism.

The development would be the biggest ever hydro scheme in Scotland.

A planning applications committee for Highland Council has considered the proposal following a visit to the site on Monday. Officials recommended that the council not raise any objections.

But it has been suggested that actions be taken sure ensure the impact on residents, businesses and the environment is minimal.

The committee has supported the plans, but ultimately the final decision on the SSE development will go to the Scottish government.

Building the new hydro scheme would involve the building of a dam, reservoir, underground power station and water tunnels in the hills above Loch Lochy.

Scottish Natural Heritage have expressed concern over the impact on the local landscape and believes it would be significantly affected.

The hyrdo scheme works by storing excess power generated by wind and wave farms and using it to pump water up to a reservoir.

This water can then be used to generate hydro electric power at times of consumer demand.

The schemes are described by many as "green batteries", but it is also argued that they use more energy than they produce.

SSE have said the construction would take five to six years and create about 150 jobs.
