Edinburgh Leads Scotland's Affordable Housing

Nearly a third of all Scotland's new affordable housing planning approvals were made in Edinburgh last year.

The news comes as Scottish government statistics show the city council gave planning permission for 1,420 new affordable homes.

The figure amounts to 30% of the total approvals throughout the country.

The council says the news proves its housing strategy and planning and investment policies are working.

Half of the new affordable housing in Edinburgh will be built without public subsidy.

In many areas throughout the country affordable homes are publicly funded.

Councillor Cammy Day, Housing Leader, said: "These figures show that Edinburgh has become one of the UK's leading local authorities in delivering badly-needed new affordable homes.

"Our planning and investment policies, linked to a positive and co-operative relationship between the Council and developers, builders and housing associations has resulted in this record number of approvals.

"This partnership work is ensuring the Capital Coalition is delivering on our commitment to ensure that the city's residents are well-housed and have good quality affordable homes to live in."

The developments noted in the review include 145 affordable homes under construction at Salamander Place; the biggest single project to be undertaken through the scheme and Pitsligo Road, in which the first affordable homes in Morningside since the 1930s have been built.

The government figures reinforce the commendation Edinburgh received last month for outstanding performance and quality at the Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning.
