It is hoped that six well known local public greenspaces in the Falkirk Council area will have protected status under a scheme that aims to safeguard the future of sports facilities and open spaces across the UK.

A meeting of the Policy and Resources committee heard that six of Falkirk Council’s ‘core’ parks would be proposed as a Queen Elizabeth II ‘Fields in Trust’ (FIT) as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.


The six parks nominated are:

•Sunnyside Playing Fields, Falkirk

•Gairdoch Park, Carronshore

•Duncan Stewart Park, Bonnybridge

•Douglas Park, Bo’ness

•Herbertshire Castle Park, Denny

•Avonbridge Park, Avonbridge

Being awarded FIT status permanently would safeguard outdoor recreational spaces through a legal document that prevents potential future development on the land for non recreational purposes without the consent of Fields in Trust.

Councillor Craig Martin, Convener of Policy and Resources said: "Parks provide so much for our local communities and this scheme (if the Parks are adopted by Fields in Trust) would ensure that they will be preserved for generations to come.

"Fields in Trust is a great way of ensuring this and we are proud to be part of the UK wide initiative."
