Clearance Work To Begin At Riverside

Clearance work is set to begin on the banks of the River Forth at Riverside to open up views to the river and restore and enhance Stirling's historic harbour area.

On a visit to the site, Provost Mike Robbins said: "A river is the lifeblood of a community, and we have an opportunity to breathe new life into the River Forth at Stirling by restoring our historic harbour area and developing it as an attraction and resource for local people and visitors alike.

"As this summer's Jubilee flotilla event on the Forth showed, there's great interest in Stirling’s river heritage, and we have the potential to once more become a favourite mooring-place for crafts of all kinds. If we can attract more boats and also enhance this stretch of the riverbank so people can walk and cycle and enjoy the magnificent views across to the Wallace Monument and Cambuskenneth Abbey to their full potential, everyone will benefit."

The old harbour, in the Riverside area of the city close to the city centre, is currently the site of a small park. Its previous life as a thriving trade hub is marked by a commemorative plaque placed by the Stirling Guildry. For some years people living in the Shore Road area have been unable to enjoy views across to the harbour and the river itself because of overgrown trees. Stirling Council will now be clearing this vegetation, restoring the harbour and exploring ideas to develop it as a visitor attraction.
