A project in South Lanarkshire that is not even open yet has opened a Green Apple award.
The zero-carbon Scottish Water project in Cartland, near Lanark, was so innovative and environmentally sustainable, judges awarded it the Scottish Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice before construction was compelte.
The award will be presented at Edinburgh Castle on September 10. As a result of the award win, the £1.5m Cartland project may yet be chosen to represent Scotland at the Brussels-led European Business Awards for the Environment.
Paul Sharp, Construction Manager at Scottish Water Solutions, said: "Our dedication and hard work to design and implement such a bold solution has been recognised with this fantastic accolade. Our core aim was always to install a facility that will serve the village but be harmonious with the surrounding environment. There is a small sensitive watercourse nearby that the final effluent will discharge into called the Brocklinn Burn. The project will protect the natural environment in the burn and ensure that the waste water treatment for Cartland continues to meet strict EU guidelines. We are constantly looking at ways to provide sustainable waste water treatment solutions for the people of Scotland and this is our latest venture in that area.
"As well as a low carbon facility - one of the first of its kind in Scotland - we will be able to offer new customers a free connection to the Scottish Water network after which they will pay the low sewage charges enjoyed by the majority of people in Scotland.
"The project will feed a horizontal subsurface and vertical flow wetland treatment system before discharging very high quality effluent to the Brocklinn Burn. The total site footprint is 3000m2, with the wetland area counting for 550m2.
"After discussion with SEPA it was decided that we would construct a new works near the A73. This location also offers access to the site through a dedicated access road, which is favourable to the current set up where we have to go through the village."
