Leith Walk Reinstatement To Run 7pm-2am

Works on a city centre project in Edinburgh may be carried out at night, according to the Scotsman newspaper.

Under proposals being considered by Edinburgh City Council, planned Leith Walk reinstatement could be carried out with working hours of between 7pm and 2am in order to prevent a repeat of the two-year-long disruption in the area.

Contractors are currently being sought for the £5.5m project, which will include major resurfacing of roads and pavements damaged by the axed tram route, and returning statues to the area.

The work will run for an estimated 18 months.

But residents are worried about the noise and floodlights that would be required for the work.

Tracy Griffen, 38, who runs her own fitness studio above her Leith Walk flat, told the Scotsman: "I live and work right next to Leith Walk so I get no escape from it if it goes ahead.

"I realise what suits the businesses might not necessarily suit residents and I guess it will be a discussion we will have to have."

Alan Rudland, spokesman for the Leith Business Association, said businesses were "still recovering" from the last set of roadworks.

He said: "From a business perspective, the 7pm to 2am works would be a good move but we realise we are not the only stakeholders and we need to look at the bigger picture."
