An electrical goods store in Glasgow's West End is to make way for student housing.

A plan to build 174 student flats in Dumbarton Road has been given the go-ahead.

The Comet store on the street, opposite Mansefield Park, will be demolished to make way for the flats, built by specialist student housing providers Alumno Developments.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau were among the nine organisations and individuals who wrote letters of support for the scheme.


The council received seven letters opposing the proposals.

Alumno Developments plans to staff the building at all times with a site manager during office hours and students wardens at other times.

There will also be a call centre number available for any problems with noise or other emergencies.

Local councillor Aileen Colleran objected to the location of the student housing, saying many neighbours were "elderly or housebound".

David Campbell of Alumno Developments told the Glasgow Evening Post that the development would be "well managed around the clock".

He said: "We believe this development will help meet the high demand for student accommodation, particularly in the West End, which has been identified as lacking."

Mr Campbell said the flats would also create employment opportunities.
