A 22-year-old product design student who won the Prince Philip Prize from the Glasgow Hammermen Guild said she is "very happy" to be recognised by engineers.
Susie Smart studies at the University of Strathclyde's department of design manufacture and engineering management.
She won the £1,500 Prince Philip prize after being nominated for a Hammermen Award by her institution.
She won the prize on the strength of her university portfolio, which included a machine for tying the ends of sausages.
Smart, from Pittenweem in Fife, told the Sunday Herald newspaper: "Aside from the prize money, obviously this is an amazing thing to have on my CV. I'm very happy to be recognised by engineers and not just as a designer."
She will spend eleven weeks this year undertaking internships at design engineering firms, starting at Advanced Infrastructure Design Engineering in New Jersey.
The Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow was founded in the 16th century to maintain the standard of metalworking in the city but membership has since widened to include industrialists, entrepreneurs, watchmakers and more.
Alastair Burrow, Deacon of the Hammermen, said: "We were looking for people with a clear commitment to engineering as a career and a clear idea of what they will do with the prize and how they will serve the community in the future. We encourage young people to see engineering as a worthy career. Our message is that it is still the manufacturers who create the wealth in this country."
