Councillors will visit a Glasgow site before deciding whether to approve controversial plans for flats.

More than 4,000 people have objected to plans for a waterfront housing development in Otago Lane in the West End.

And as councillors arrived at City Chambers for a meeting of the city's planning committee, they were met by protestors against the development who handed out leaflets and carried banners.

The protestors started campaigning against the development three years ago.


They asked that the plans for four townhouses and 45 flats be refused permission, arguing that they would threaten the "unique" bohemian and university area.

They said businesses and jobs would be threatened by the multi-million pound redevelopment on the banks of the River Kelvin.

Planning officials have given their backing to the plan by city-based Otago Street Developments.

But the council's elected representatives will now visit Otago Lane to consider the project’s impact.

A leaflet handed out by the protestors read: "The council's support for the development is irrational. It does not serve the community to have more flats, there is no clear economic argument for their existence, it transgresses a multitude of planning laws and will be highly detrimental to the community, environment and heritage which the laws are designed to protect."
