Global Infrastructure Partners, the company that owns Gatwich and London City airports, has now formally taken control of the site.
BAA sold the airport after a Competition Commission ruling.
With passenger numbers expected to increase, expansion is a possibility.
The airport has just announced more than 20 new international services for 2012, including Istanbul, Orlando and Cancun.

And Sir John Elvidge, chairman of Edinburgh Airport, said his team would look into the possibility of flying to more places in future.
He said: "We have an excellent, supportive owner and a world-class management team, each of us is determined to raise Scotland's profile around the world, connect Edinburgh with more destinations, and provide passengers with a great experience and more choice."
Edinburgh Airport's former managing director, Gordon Dewar, will return from Bahrain International Airport to become Chief Executive Officer at his old workplace this summer.
He said he was looking forward to coming back to his home city for the "irresistible challenge" of leading the airport into "a new era of competition and growth".
The three-runway airport was last subject to major refurbishment works in 2000, and an £11m, 187ft, air traffic control tower was built in 2005.
