A new art exhibition celebrating life in GHA communities opens its doors this week – featuring work by the tenants themselves.
The ‘High Flats’ project tells the stories of the residents living in GHA neighbourhoods, focusing in particular on the multi-storey flats in Knightswood, Townhead and Cranhill.
Scottish contemporary artist Sandy Guy has produced three large-scale works of art looking at the exteriors of the buildings.
Sandy also opened his studio for workshops over the past 10 weeks to encourage residents and art students to produce their own pieces of work celebrating life in the multi-storeys.
The exhibition, at 21 Stockwell Street in the city centre, opens to the public on Saturday and runs every day until 28 April.
Sandy said: "I’ve always had an interest in the multi-storeys. The flats are picturesque. They are full of stories and have become a famous part of Glasgow’s history. They are a symbol of the city.
"The biggest reward for me is being able to give people the opportunity to develop their art. Many of the people who have come through the door have never had the opportunity to paint before. I’ve also been able to give art students a chance to exhibit their work for the first time."
Sandy’s project will move to New Orleans after the Glasgow exhibition closes.
GHA’s Assistant Director of Regeneration David Fletcher said: "We’re delighted to be supporting this exhibition.
"It’s a great opportunity for residents in our communities to tell their stories and to get a chance to work alongside an established artist such as Sandy. The exhibition has really helped bring residents from all the areas together to share their memories of living in the flats."
