The residents of Bield’s care home at Langvout Court in Biggar now have a beautiful re-vamped garden to while away the hours and appreciate local wildlife all thanks to a funding boost from players of a charity lottery.
Bield was awarded £4,860 by People’s Postcode Trust, a grant-giving charity, funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
Bield used the money to turn an unused grassy area into a community wildlife garden. Sheltered seating areas enable residents and their families and friends to make the most of the Scottish Summers. Raised beds have been added to encourage residents to grow their own vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers.
To encourage community use children at BiggarPrimary School have been allocated their own area to grow flowers and vegetables. The children visit each week, much to the delight of the residents who love to watch the youngsters marvel at the delights of nature.
New residents in the garden include 2 ducks and there’s plenty of room for lady birds and bees who can reside in specially created ‘hotels’.
The three month project was carried out during the latter half of 2011. Clydesdale Community Initiative who completed the groundwork and Hamish Neilson and Bill Allan who created the original plans will be delighted to see their work come to fruition.
Brian Logan, Chief Executive of Bield commented: "We are delighted to receive funds from the People’s Postcode Lottery. The money has enabled us to develop the gardens into an area that will be much appreciated and well used by the residents and the local community. We are sure the local wildlife will make the most of the gardens too."
