ScotRail Make £1m Commonwealth Games Investment

ScotRail has announced a £1million programme of improvements in passenger facilities at 19 stations in Glasgow and Lanarkshire in the run up to the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

This will meet a commitment to Scottish Ministers to deliver enhancements to support spectators travelling by rail to the Games events.

Work will begin later this year at stations close to key venues and at ‘feeder’ stations which are expected to be used by many passengers throughout the major international sporting event in summer 2014.

These will include new customer information screens, waiting shelters, seating and lighting.

ScotRail will also work with Network Rail on a series of refurbishments at stations during scheduled maintenance periods.

In addition around £600,000 of funding, from Transport Scotland and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, has been secured for further improvements – particularly to access – at 11 stations in Glasgow and Lanarkshire as well as Carnoustie, Angus.

Rail users will see the changes take shape gradually from now and the Commonwealth Games.

Steve Montgomery, ScotRail’s managing director, said: "We are delighted to deliver this commitment on projects in time for Glasgow 2014.

"The city will be a key focus for people from around the world, and the work that we are doing will ensure that Scotland’s railway is reflected positively."

Transport Minister, Keith Brown said: "I am delighted that ScotRail is meeting its commitment to invest £1million in new passenger facilities to make travelling by train to the Games a better option for spectators.

"This work, in conjunction with Network Rail, will deliver real benefits and help make rail travel a better choice for passengers during and after the 2014 Games."

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, added: "We are pleased to be working with ScotRail to further enhance stations ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

"As rail travel continues to grow in popularity it is vital we ensure passengers are provided with the best possible facilities at our stations."
