NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s mental health strategy for Inverclyde is now completed with the opening of the new Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit (IPCU) at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.
The new Langhill Clinic was opened by NHSGGC chairman Andrew Robertson.
NHSGGC has invested £7million in the new Langhill Clinic improving mental health inpatient facilities to allow 70 nursing, medical and occupational therapy staff to deliver care in modern, purpose-built accommodation.
The Langhill Clinic has 20 acute mental health admission beds and an eight-bed intensive care unit. Each patient has their own bedroom with en-suite shower and facilities. The clinic also has purpose built activity areas and landscaped gardens accessible from the wards.
The ground floor of the clinic houses a day patient facility and treatment rooms, alongside an out-of-hour’s acute assessment suite.
The opening of the unit is another step forward in completing the NHSGGC’s Mental Health Strategy as it will allow services to move off the Ravenscraig Hospital site. As part of that strategy NHSGGC has already provided new accommodation for community mental health, learning disabilities and addiction services at three sites in Greenock town centre.
Chairman Andrew Robertson said: "The opening of the new IPCU and introduction of new services to this area will make a real difference to the people of Inverclyde who will now have access to the best services in their community in a beautifully refurbished fit-for-purpose facility."
Patients, their families and carers have all been directly involved in the new design of the Langhill Clinic, they were able to view a ‘mock up’ of the new facility at Ravenscraig Hospital and consider colour schemes, furnishings and how they would like the building to look and feel. It has been specifically designed with their needs in mind.
NHSGGC head of mental and partnerships Susanna McCorry-Rice said: "The quality of the environment is very important to the treatment and recovery of patients. Patients themselves and their carers have been involved in the design process of the new facility and it reflects what people feel contributes positively to their hospital stay."
