Water Resources Course Launched

A new Water Resources MSc was launched today by Heriot-Watt University at its Dubai campus.

Cabinet Secretary for the Environment Richard Lochhead visited the campus, recently opened by the First Minister Alex Salmond, for the launch and gave a short speech to industry leaders, academic staff and students about how in Scotland we make best use of our water resources.

The water resources programme will focus on sustainable water resource issues in relation to climate change. Students will develop knowledge and skills for planning and management to meet the needs of different environments.

Commenting on the launch of the course Mr Lochhead said: "As we seek to build further economic and cultural ties, education is at the forefront of Scotland’s relationship with the UAE. I am delighted that the university has decided to launch this new masters and diploma course on such an important concern as the sustainable use of water resources. The global environment does not recognise international borders so I very much welcome and support the need to promote greater awareness and understanding on issues which will affect us all.

“Water is of fundamental importance for Scotland’s economy, health, social wellbeing and environment. All businesses rely on the water environment in some way or another and water plays a prominent role in the success of many sectors of the economy. Some are of strategic importance to Scotland, such as tourism, food and drinks manufacturing and renewable energy generation - the Scottish Government describes Scotland as a Hydro Nation, where we utilise Scottish expertise to maximise the benefit of our abundant water resources, within a sound ecological context, by reducing energy use and improving efficiency.
