Scottish Enterprise Announce Re-Appointments

Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism Fergus Ewing today announced the re-appointment of Professor Jim McDonald and Mr Graeme Waddell to the board of Scottish Enterprise.

Scottish Enterprise is the Scottish Government’s main agency for economic development in North East, Central and Lowland Scotland.

The Scottish Government provides Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise with a clear strategic direction through the Government Economic Strategy.

Professor Jim McDonald – Jim McDonald was appointed to the SE board in August 2008.

Prof. McDonald is Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, an international technological University. His own area of expertise is in power and energy systems and technologies.

He plays a leadership role in two of Scotland’s research pools, engineering and energy, through which he works with others to further develop Scotland’s international research excellence. He works at the strategic interface with industry and has led the creation of several high profile, recent, academic and industrial partnerships i.e. the Advance Forming Research Centre, the Power Network Demonstration Centre, the Technology Innovation Centre (at Strathclyde), Continuous Manufacturing and Crystallisation and has been closely involved in the Technology Strategy Board catapult programmes, most notably High Value Manufacturing and Offshore Renewable Energy.

Mr Graeme Waddell – Graeme Waddell was appointed to the SE board in August 2008.

Mr Waddell is Director of Energen Biogas a renewable energy company which he recently established. He is a former Business Director of Rolls Royce Aero Repair and Overhaul responsible for providing leadership and business focus for the 1,000 people employed by Rolls Royce in East Kilbride. Graeme brings wide experience both leading a Global Plc and now working with SMEs. He is passionate about leadership, people and skills required for increasing productivity and company growth.

The re-appointments will be for three years and will run from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2014. They attract a remuneration of £12,581 per annum for a time commitment of two and a half days per month.

Jim McDonald is co-chair of the Scottish Energy Advisory Board, Chair of the Glasgow Science Centre and a member of several Industry Advisory Groups. All of these posts are part-time and Professor McDonald does not receive any remuneration for them. Graeme Waddell does not hold any other Public appointments.

These re-appointments were made in accordance with the code of practice published by the Public Appointments Commissioner for Scotland.

All re-appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the re-appointment process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Both candidates did not declare any political activity.
