Building Restoration in Kirkcaldy High Street

A neglected building dating from the early 1900s has been restored to its former glory by the current owners Nevisport with support from the Kirkcaldy Conservation Areas Regeneration Scheme.

The unusual and highly ornate dormer windows have been restored and ornate ironwork at roof level has been reinstated. The original ornate cast ironwork, called ‘crestings’ have been specially re-cast, at a foundry in Bo’ness. These and other improvements have returned the building, which occupies a prominent position within the historic centre of Kirkcaldy, to its former appearance enhancing the Conservation Area.

Rab Ferrell General Manager of Nevisport said: "The Conservation Areas Regeneration Scheme (CARS) has allowed us to restore our building to its former glory and enabled us to reinstate features which, without the grant aid, would not have been commercially viable.Arthur Montgomery Associates, the architect, have been invaluable, working with the Regeneration Team at Fife Council."

Councillor Alice Soper, Chair of Kirkcaldy Area Committee, added: "These improvements have been supported by grant funding from Kirkcaldy CARS. This is an exciting five year partnership project of Fife Council and Historic Scotland to improve the town’s historic centre to help to secure a prosperous future for the town centre."

The project aims to enhance the quality of the historic environment by offering grants of up to 65% for eligible building repairs and 90% for reinstatement of architectural detail. Eligible works are limited to traditional and high quality external enhancements and can include refurbishment of doors, windows, appropriate signage and security measures, replacement lighting and professional fees.
