City Building Wins Top Environmental Award

City Building – one of Scotland’s largest construction firms – has scooped a prestigious award in recognition of its commitment to the environment at the Vision in Business for the Environment of Scotland (VIBES) Awards 2011.

The VIBES Awards celebrate the actions and achievements of Scottish companies in reducing their impact on the environment.

City Building – Glasgow City Council's arm’s-length construction company – won the Energy Award at a ceremony held at The Hub in Edinburgh.

City Building has successfully delivered new energy-efficient schools and housing and renovated properties throughout Glasgow, while also enabling clients to benefit from reduced gas and electricity consumption.

Via the ground-breaking Glasgow House project, City Building has constructed highly energy-efficient, comfortable prototype homes which deliver a two-thirds reduction in the typical energy costs of a three-bedroom home.

City Building is also training Scotland’s first generation of "renewables" tradespeople with specific qualifications in micro-renewables as part of their apprenticeship programme.

City Building managing director John Foley, said: "It is an honour to win a VIBES Award in the Energy category as this celebrates businesses that are committed to reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions in Scotland.

"This is great recognition for our dedication to energy efficiency in our own premises and also in the services we provide as part of our construction and maintenance work for clients.

"Not only does being green support the environment but it can also boost your bottom-line. New innovations in energy-efficient construction will mean great savings for our clients and we look forward to building even further on our green successes in the future."

Gillian Bruce, VIBES chair, said: "The VIBES Awards recognise businesses which have taken significant steps to improve or reduce their impact on the environment. We would like to congratulate each of the winning and shortlisted companies.

"These companies impressed the judges with their innovation, dedication and support for sustainable practices while also protecting their bottom line. We hope that other Scottish businesses will follow their example and achieve their environmental goals."
