The plant - which will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - will recycle municipal waste, primarily from Midlothian and City of Edinburgh Councils.

- Contribute substantially to meeting waste-reduction targets as set out in the Zero Waste Plan
- Accords with the Edinburgh and Lothians Structure Plan and the Midlothian Local Plan
- Accords with the EU Waste Framework Directive
