The Powerwall Volumetric modular building system has been chosen for a £10-million housing association project.
Du Cane Housing Association is adding additional accommodation for key workers and postgraduate students to its Du Cane Road development in Hammersmith, London.
The modular system is being used to add another storey to the existing four-storey block and to insert additional flats in gap sites along the development. A total of 44 new dwellings will be added to the existing 112 units in a number of phases.
The new housing units are pre-fabricated in Scotland using Powerwall’s patented Volumetric modular building system and transported to London where the main contractor Apollo Group is managing the construction and build for the two-and-half year project. Powerwall is also providing external thermal cladding as well as implementing an internal fit out of bathrooms and kitchens.
“We chose the Powerwall modular building system to minimise construction time, thereby reducing disruption to residents, who are all students or key workers at Imperial College and Hammersmith Hospital,” said Steve Kelly, divisional manager at the Apollo Group.
He added: “On a project which presents a number of logistical difficulties, the use of modular units has saved precious time, minimising levels of disruption faced by the residents and allowing the client to reap the benefits of a faster result.”
Domenic Tedesco, managing director of Powerwall said: “Our patented system is perfect for projects such as this where space is at a premium, disruption must be kept to a minimum and speed is of the essence. As the units are partially completed off-site it means less time and hassle for the contractor on site. Moreover our system exceeds all the current building standards for thermal efficiency, insulation and sound proofing.”
