Partnership Secures Norwegian Engineering Contract

A partnership extending across the North Sea between Aberdeen and Stavanger has enabled oil and gas consultancy Apply Altra to secure participation in a front end engineering and design (FEED) contract in Norway.

The contract for topside FEED engineering on Marathon’s Bøyla Tie-Back Project will be carried out jointly with Apply Sørco – the Norwegian mother company of Apply Altra – and is expected to be the first of many significant projects that will involve cross border co-operation.

The staff from Aberdeen will have the main responsibility for the topside process design solutions, primarily supplying process and technical safety engineering disciplines, but also supporting with other relevant discipline capacity.

The Bøyla Tie-Back project is a sub-sea tie back of two wells to the Marathon Alvheim field producing from the Alvheim floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit. The current production at Alvheim is approximately 140000 bbll oil per day, the Bøyla tie-back is anticipated to secure 20000 new bll per day.

Apply Altra technical manager Kevin Hunt said that staff at Aberdeen would be instrumental in delivering the project for Marathon. He added: “Apply Altra aims to become a centre of excellence within the Apply group for process and front end engineering design, and that is why we have been selected to work on this project.

“Apply Sorco has a huge amount of expertise in Norway, but the team at Aberdeen can complement what already exists there and add value to this particular contract. The experience in the team here is different to the experience in the team in Norway, and we can bring more benefit to our partners by using both sides of the water.

“We are currently looking at other areas of our competencies to assess where we can develop this close partnership between Aberdeen and Norway in the future.”

Apply Altra was launched in April following a takeover of Altra Energy by Apply Sorco. The Apply group has 2,000 employees across Europe, and the acquisition was an important step in the group’s growth strategy to develop and maintain a base of expertise in Aberdeen.
