Building Heritage On Show

Newark Castle in Port Glasgow and the iconic Custom House in Greenock are among the star attractions in Inverclyde's Doors Open Days.

Over 30 venues are taking part in this year's event which takes place across Scotland as part of European Heritage Days which sees millions of visitors in 50 countries explore a wide range of sites.

Regeneration Convener Councillor Ronnie Ahlfeld said: "This is a fantastic chance for people to see some of Inverclyde's iconic buildings and attractions.

"I am delighted we have so many new venues including the brand new Notre Dame High School and Clydeview Academy, Wemyss Bay Station and of course The Custom House," he said.

The Greenock Custom House building was designed by William Burn in 1818 and is considered by many to be the finest in Britain. It underwent extensive refurbishment in 1989 and, until 2010, housed a customs and excise museum, which was open to the public. Regeneration Company Riverside Inverclyde acquired the property in January 2011 and have an ambitious plan to invest in the building and provide modern accommodation and possibly some public use within the building.

Councillor Ahlfeld added: "This will be the first time people have been able to see inside The Custom House since it ceased to be an active Customs and Excise office and learn about its history and plans for its future.

"Other highlights I am sure will include a behind-the-scenes look at the Waterfront Leisure Centre and Greenock Sheriff Court. Doors Open Days provide many unique experiences for visitors and offer a fascinating opportunity for people to get a glimpse of how events have shaped the landscapes of our towns and villages," he concluded.
