Govan Pirates Launch Raid On Riverside Museum

A group of young pirates launched a daring raid on the new Riverside Museum to launch an arts project in Govan.

Around 80 youngsters dressed as pirates and Vikings crossed the River Clyde on the new Govan Ferry and planted flags on the other side to reclaim the territory as part of the ancient burgh of Govan.

The arts project is part of a £1.2m programme of environmental improvements, which includes a new walkway and sculptures, carried out by Glasgow Housing Association in the Govan Riverside area.

Also involved in the raid, which took place on Friday 29 July 2011, were Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and the GalGael Trust, whose boats accompanied the river crossing with two sets of drummers.

The pirates’ raid, which also featured parents and GHA staff, celebrated the restoration of the historic link between the two sides of the river with the new Govan ferry.

GHA commissioned artist Matt Baker to work with the community to incorporate artwork into the programme of environmental improvements for Govan Riverside.

The £1.2m programme of works, agreed in consultation with local residents, include a series of granite markers on a resurfaced walkway along the Clyde, new railings and pathway marker posts made from recycled materials. Also planned are a series of sculptures and discussion events on the history of Govan and the River Clyde.

Hazel Young, GHA’s South Area Director, said: “The raid was a lot of fun. The project really captured the young people’s imagination and they learned a lot about the area’s history.

“Govan is such a vibrant community. The environmental works really enhance the look of the Riverside and projects like the pirates’ raid encourage a real sense of pride in the area.”

GHA’s partners in the environmental improvement works were Glasgow City Council and Land Engineering.
