The Grade ‘A’ listed façade of Greenock’s former police station has been permanently preserved in a £250,000 makeover.

Five years ago the site, part of the Municipal Buildings, was granted planning permission to be redeveloped into offices. The façade was granted listed building consent and retained while the building behind was demolished.

Regeneration Convener Councillor Ronnie Ahlfeld said “We felt it was important to preserve this fine example of sandstone carving which is a landmark in Greenock town centre. Unfortunately our original intention to build new office space behind it is no longer practical or financially viable however we felt it was important to greatly enhance its appearance. A great deal is being done to improve our town centres in Inverclyde and the Municipal Buildings are an important focal point in Greenock. If we are to deliver on our commitment to develop the area as a tourist destination we need to ensure our cultural, industrial and civic heritage is presented as well as it can be.”


A steel retention system erected in 2005 has been removed and replaced with a diaphragm wall which cannot be seen from the street. The stonework has been cleaned and where necessary minor repairs have been carried out.

Regeneration Vice Convener Councillor Stephen McCabe said “This is a huge improvement to the north façade of the Municipal Buildings and combined with the transformation of the former fire station alongside it gives us an idea of how the complex as a whole would have looked when it was completed in the 1830’s. These buildings are among the most important in Inverclyde and we are committed to preserving them for future generations.”
