Fife Council Building Service has scooped silver, at the Green Apple Awards 2011 for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage.

The award was for their Pittencrieff House Museum Project and the funding was split between the Council and CARS (a scheme to conserve Dunfermline's outstanding conservation area, co-funded by Historic Scotland and Fife Council, awarding grants for traditional repairs of historic buildings).


The judges commented: "The exterior of Pittencrieff House Museum, a 17th Century a listed building in Dunfermline, was restored to its former glory. This was achieved by working with The Scottish Lime Centre and Historic Scotland to gain skills, knowledge and the sourcing of specialized materials.

'The project encompassed a multitude of repairs which included repointing, rebuilding of chimneys, the restoration of heraldic panels and renewal of wrought iron work.

"Local materials and local craftsmen were used, developing 400 year old building methods to bring them into the 21st century."

The awards were presented by Trevor Baylis, the renowned British inventor, famous for inventing the wind up radio. Created in 1994, the Green Apple awards are one of the most respected environmental awards programmes in the world.
