Progress Hailed On 'Low Carbon Stirling'

Stirling Council and Going Carbon Neutral Stirling (GCNS) are continuing their Low Carbon Stirling campaign to work together and with other groups to help local people and businesses reduce their carbon footprint and support a more sustainable future.

The Council's Executive last Thursday (26 May 2011) received an update on the campaign, which has developed a range of activities based on four key themes: Energy, Food, Transport, Waste and Consumption.

Over the coming year, the campaign will include the launch of a new website, encourage sustainable transport options, including cycling. An innovative, edible borders project will aim get people growing healthy seasonal vegetables and herbs in their gardens, and perhaps share produce with other local people and community groups.

The Council has set an energy efficiency target of £100,000 and an internal energy awareness raising campaign for staff. A feasibility project to identify the Council’s opportunities for renewable energy has also been commissioned by the Council.

Councillor Alasdair MacPherson, Portfolio Holder for Housing, commented:"In Housing Services our recent new build and conversion developments carried out by our own workforce have included underfloor heating, solar thermal panels, micro combined heat and power units. We have ambitious plans to install a significant amount of Solar Photovoltaic Panels later this year in our housing stock to take advantage of the attractive feed in tariffs that are currently on offer from the UK Government.

"The use of Solar PV and other microgeneration technologies has the potential to generate income which will be reinvested into our housing stock for the benefit our tenants."
