Comhairle Seeks Consents For Lews Castle Repairs

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is seeking Planning and Listed Building consents for external repairs to Lews Castle.

The applications cover a planned first phase of works to make the envelope of the building weather tight and allow for a drying out period in advance of restoration of the interior fabric.

The first phase of works includes repairs to the roofs and external walls, re-pointing, repairs to windows, removal of a utility block, modern alterations and damaged finishes in the service areas of the castle and removal of asbestos.

The current applications form part of the ongoing proposals to re-develop the A-Listed castle for museum, archive and hospitality use. Design work on the main development proposals is well advanced and will be the subject of public consultation before further applications for Planning and Listed Building Consents are submitted in the summer.

As part of the design process, site investigations were undertaken during the week commencing Monday 25 April. This involved test drilling and excavations in the area immediately around the castle. Members of the public and especially pet owners are urged to take extra care while the contractor is on site.

Commenting on progress with the project, Joe Macphee, Head of Economic Development said: "Design work on the development is well advanced and we will shortly be in a position to share these proposals with the local community and wider stakeholders. The project team is working very hard to secure the total funding package needed for this exciting project.

"Subject to approvals by the Comhairle and Historic Scotland the current consent applications have been submitted to allow work on securing the shell to proceed in advance of the main development."
