One of Scotland's largest construction firms has been chosen to provide a training facility for residents of a supported accommodation project in Glasgow.
City Building will construct and fit a ‘training kitchen’ at Monteith Housing in the city’s East End so that its residents can develop their knowledge and skills with the assistance of Gowrie Care, who provide support services to the 25 residents.
City Building has a unique social ethos and a long history of providing employment, training and other opportunities to local communities. This latest business win demonstrates that City Building continues to strike the right balance between empowering local people and the need to generate revenue in a competitive commercial environment.
Located near Glasgow Green, Monteith House was once one of the city’s most sought-after addresses. But for the last 60 years it has been operating as supported accommodation for people with particular needs, with centrally provided kitchen and washing facilities.
Willie Docherty, managing director of City Building, said: “By tendering for this project and others like it we are demonstrating that City Building is committed to helping local communities, including the more vulnerable members of our society.
“Projects like this one at Monteith House will provide long-term benefits for the residents who have lived there for many years. It will provide them with life skills and the ability to develop on a personal level, as well as improving community integration.”
Ronnie Shearer, Technical Officer at Thenew Housing Association, said: “We are delighted to work alongside City Building to enhance the facilities at the project for the benefit of the residents. Thenew Housing Association has owned the building for four years and has plans to provide a modern replacement building within the same area.”
