A multi million pound investment for the M876 will act as a catalyst for economic growth in the Central Scotland said Transport Minister Keith Brown.
The Minister was speaking as he confirmed funding for the M876 Glenbervie Connecting Roads project. The scheme, which will see the upgrading of the junction between the A9 and M876 to a four-way interchange, is expected to improve direct accessibility to the motorway, and the Clackmannanshire Bridge, from the Larbert area.
Mr Brown said: “This project is just one example of the many ways in which we are investing in improvements to our transport infrastructure to ensure it is fit for purpose.
“By contributing to the funding of project we are able to ensure improved connections for users of the A9 and M876 in this area while helping to ease congestion through a better flow of traffic.”
Cllr Craig Martin, Leader of Falkirk Council said: "The introduction of the new scheme will help us to reduce significant levels of traffic from the local road network and will provide a better infrastructure for access to and from the new hospital as well as for residents and businesses.
“We are confident that there will be a reduction in the number of accidents, costs to drivers and hauliers and lower our greenhouse gas emissions.”
The scheme is being jointly funded by the Scottish Government through Transport Scotland, Falkirk Council and Scottish Enterprise with Ministers contribution being around two thirds of the final project costs. Falkirk Council will design, procure and manage the project.
Tenders are expected to be issued in June this year with contract award in August and construction starting September. The scheme is planned to be opened by March 2012.
